We believe that giving back to our community is an essential responsibility. Our staff participate in the following organizations and civic activities:


Habitat for Humanity Build Days

Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity of Metro Denver builds and sells homes to hard-working people in need of decent and affordable housing. They are an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.  Founded by volunteers in 1979, they have since then built 360 homes in the Denver metro area, housing well over 1,500 people. They are recognized as one of the finest affiliates in the country and were honored in 2005 as the National Affiliate of the Year. HHMD also consistently win awards for their top-rated energy efficient homes,which are well-built, easy to maintain and enhance the neighborhoods in which they build.  Kirsten and Brandon participate in Build Days for Habitat’s Metro Denver chapter.    www.habitatmetrodenver.org


Sierra Club

The Sierra Club’s members and supporters are more than 1.3 million of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, they work together to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. www.sierraclub.org

Scott is an active member of SC’s Sprawl and Transportation Committee.




Solstice Institute

A 501c3 nonprofit organization co-created by VARADAAN Benjamin Howard Lipman on January 19 1995, the Solstice Institute was created as an active experiment to promote Sustainable Culture, both the theory and the practice, both teachings and practice.    www.sustainability.org/solstice.html

Consortium of Cities Energy Task Force – Commercial Green Code Committee

In April of 2006, the Consortium of Cities established the Energy Strategy Task Force. The goal of the Task Force is to create collaborative approaches among Boulder County, the municipalities in the County, Broomfield City and County, their businesses, non-profit organizations and residents to address critical energy concerns and strategies, such as reduction of the emission of green house gases that are producing global warming, the promotion of renewable energy production, and reducing the energy costs incurred by residents and businesses. http://co.boulder.co.us/bocc/consortium/Energy/

Scott and Ron serve on the Committee that has been working for the past year to create a uniform commercial green building code for Boulder County.


American Institute of Architects

Based in Washington, D.C., the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners since 1857. www.aiacolorado.org

Scott Rodwin served as AIA Colorado North President, Chair of AIA Colorado Committee on the Environment, and Managing Editor of AIA Denver’s Sustainable Design Resource Guide.  He was named AIA’s 2006 “Young Architect of the Year” for the U.S. Western Mountain Region.




Architects and Planners of Boulder

Architects and Planners of Boulder (APOB) is a professional organization dedicated to the improvement of Boulder’s physical environment through education, advocacy, alliance building, and information sharing.

Scott has served on APOB’s executive Committee since its inception in 2002.


Boulder Green Building Guild

The Boulder Green Building Guild (BGBG) is an association of building professionals dedicated to promoting healthier, resource-efficient homes and workplaces. BGBG strives to advance the craft of green building; support their members’ environmentally-responsible endeavors; provide effective volunteer opportunities; and be the focal point for communication on green building. Their vision is to empower people to build healthy, resource-efficient communities. www.bgbg.org

Ron Flax has recently been elected as a BGBG board member. Scott and Ron are participants on the Commercial Green Building Committee, and staff frequently participate in BGBG events.



US Green Building Council

The U.S. Green Building Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation. USGBC certifies sustainable businesses, homes, hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods. USGBC is dedicated to expanding green building practices and education, and its LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™. www.usgbc.org




Center for Resource Conservation

The Center for ReSource Conservation, formerly the Boulder Energy Conservation Center (BECC), was founded in 1976 by a group of community-minded citizens seeking ways to help reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources. The organization has since developed extensive expertise in the areas of green building, renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and water conservation. Their goal objective is to provide programs and services that empower individuals to turn natural resource conservation beliefs into action in their daily lives. www.conservationcenter.org

Boulder Chamber of Commerce

In 2005 the Chamber celebrated its 100 year anniversary while organizing a cross section of the business community to influence the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan. This document will guide the future growth and redevelopment of the city and help balance the city’s values with the need for economic vitality.  www.boulderchamber.com

NAHB is a Washington, D.C.-based trade association whose mission is to enhance the climate for housing and the building industry. City of Boulder, Office of Environmental Affairs – Green Building Trainers

The City of Boulder has been a pioneer in green building since 1980, when the Energy Options Points program, the predecessor to the city’s Green Points program, was first implemented.  Since then, green building has gained momentum throughout Boulder County and around the world.  The purpose of the Green Points program is to require builders and homeowners to adopt green building practices locally.  In addition, the program has become a model for other communities interested in enhancing quality of life and reducing the environmental impacts of the local building stock.www.bouldergreenpoints.com

Scott and Ron teach green building seminars for the City.



The Denver Foundation

As Colorado’s oldest and largest community foundation, the Denver Foundation provides the expertise and leadership to help people give back to Metro Denver in ways that are meaningful — to them and to the community.


Scott serves on the Arts and Culture Committee.



Orient Land Trust

Orient Land Trust is a nonprofit Colorado land trust dedicated to the preservation of natural resources, wildlife habitat, open space, and historic and geologic features of the northern San Luis Valley for the enjoyment of current and future generations. 100% of unrestricted donations go towards open space and land conservation.

Scott volunteers his master planning skills for OLT.
